Fort St School
Training Fort Street National School was opened in 1850 in the old military hospital, now part of the National Trust Headquarters. The school was established by the Board of the National Education which was itself established in 1848 to fund and run government schools. The school was intended as a Model school and was usually called Fort Street Model School. Fort Street Training School adjoined. It trained all N.S.W. public school teachers. Whilst training, those teachers used Fort Street Model School to practise their lessons.
From 1883 women were trained at the Hurlstone Training School and in 1906 the Fort Street Training School and Hurlstone Training School were replaced by the Sydney Teachers' College. From the 1850's Fort Street Model School offered its older pupils a secondary education. Fort Street Superior Public School In 1881 the Fort Street Model School was raised in status to become Fort Street Superior Public School. This meant the provision of better secondary education for the older pupils.
